BASE CAMP TO NORTHERN MICHIGAN – ST. HELEN AIRPORT (6Y6)

Nestled in the woods of St. Helen, 6Y6 offers two wonderful grass strips with excellent surface conditions. St. Helen has a sandy base so the runways and airport grounds drain quickly after rain so you can continue to fly. There are no FBO services on-site, but Rec fuel is available within 1/2 mile of the airport. Gladwin (KGDW), Houghton Lake (KHTL) and West Branch (Y31) are a quick hop away and carry 100LL.

St. Helen Airport offers pilots the perfect gateway to experience Northern Michigan. Featuring an on-site RV and tent campground with a full playground and only a half mile from town. It truly is a perfect base camp as Mackinaw Island, Beaver Island, Traverse City, as well as many other great flying destinations are all a quick flight away.  Leaving you time to have fun at each stop. Head up to Picture Rocks for sightseeing or Two Hearted Strip for some fly fishing and be back at 6Y6 to enjoy the rest of your day.

WHAT TO DO IN ST. HELEN?

St. Helen is home to Lake St. Helen, one of the few lakes in the state that is wrapped mostly by natural lands. Explore the beauty of nature and enjoy the many areas where you can pull ashore and enjoy yourselves in a peaceful setting and not be staring into someone’s back yard.

The lake offers great fishing and is home to the annual Bluegill Festival.  Common fish are Perch, Bass, Northern Pike and it is certainly famous for its Bluegill.

Kayak the Au Sable River and do some fly fishing or just float the waters. St. Helen also offers great hunting when in season.

A half mile in town you will find several restaurants, bars and stores for all your needed items.

Feeling like hitting the trails in a side-by-side? St. Helen is home to some of the finest off-road trail systems in Northern Michigan. Grab a Side-by-Side from RZR Ripn’ Rentals and set your hair on fire or rent a kayak and hit the Au Sable. There is fun for every type of adventure.
